My Daughter's Report Card
What do you want to be when you grow up?
It’s funny trying to convey “who you are” or “who you were” or “what your family was like” to your kids, but at some point I had to try and paint a picture for them.
We’ve played Magic together a handful of times and they’ve always beaten me.
The dream’s alive, I guess.
The below came as a surprise to me.
Who am I to crush a first-grader’s dreams?
*****************************
Mira has grown tremendously throughout her first-grade year, both socially and academically. She continues to be a kind, respectful, and joyful presence in our classroom, and her thoughtful nature has become even more apparent as the year has progressed. Whether assisting with classroom routines or supporting a peer during a tricky moment, Mira consistently demonstrates empathy and patience. One memorable example of this was when she noticed a classmate struggling to organize their materials for the human body project and stepped in to help them sort and prepare their work—a reflection of the strong values she brings into our learning community. She is also an upstander who uses her social-emotional learning tools to promote kindness, resolve conflicts peacefully, and ensure everyone feels included.
Academically, Mira has shown steady and meaningful growth throughout the year. She approaches each new challenge with focus and enthusiasm, showing great persistence in both independent and group work. Mira has become more confident in following multi-step instructions and regularly contributes thoughtful ideas during class discussions. When she completes her work, she independently chooses productive follow-up activities, like reading or returning to her W.I.P. (Work in Progress) folder or working on the newest art project. On occasions when she feels distracted, Mira is quick to self-correct and get back on task. Her energy, love of learning, and consistent effort make her a joy to teach. It has been a pleasure to watch Mira’s progress this year. Her increasing confidence, compassionate spirit, and strong work ethic have made her a valued and admired member of our classroom. As she dreams of one day becoming a professional Magic player, her curiosity and drive will surely continue to lead her toward exciting new successes.
We love this report card, and if Mira wants to become a pro Magic player that’s a-okay, but on the way from A to Z it’d be nice if she’d put her shoes on when we ask her to.

The shoes man. Why is it always the shoes?!
